experiments with minimal mess
an used the equipment available. Throughout our whole project, we used
the engineering design process to come
up with our ideas, and present solutions. We first used our test sheet to see how the magic sand would react with the oil. We found that the magic sand and oil were attracted to each other. Using this information, we backed up our research.
We also tested how magic sand worked in salt water. After the oil spill, use the magic sand
and put it over the top of the water. To buy enough sand to clean up the oil
spill, it would cost $21,254,000,000
(4,56,800,000 pounds of sand.) 170,000,000 gallons of oil was spilled in the Gulf of Mexico.

630,000 gallons of water in an Olympic Sized swimming pool.

270 Olympic Sized Swimming Pools could be filled with oil spilled into the gulf.
How Magic Sand Works Magic Sand is hydrophobic.
Oil is hydrophobic.

Hydrophobic molecules are often
non-polar and tends to clump together
when magicsand is added to water,
it clumps together.

Brainstorming We looked at what magic sand was and how it absorbed liquid. We noticed that it attracted oil but not water. The Gulf Spill Statistics Testing Resources We also used salt to represent the
ocean water. We used our I-Pads and computers to assist us in finding information about what magic sand was, and how it was used. It cost a total of $40 billion to clean
up the gulf oil spill in 2010. You need 3 grams of magic sand to
clean up 1 milliliter of oil in average salt water.

25.04 lbs. magic sand to clean up 1 gal. of oil.
