The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Symbolism Project
Symbol: Red Hunting Hat

The significance of this quote is that when he puts the hat on in this scene it helps him be something or someone that he is not. If you go deeper in the text it will say that he looks tough but he actually isn't.
"I took my old hunting hat out of my pocket while I walked, and put it on. I knew I wouldn't meet anybody that knew me, and it was pretty damp out." pg. 122
The significance of this quote from page 122 is that Holden isn't confident in himself to wear this hat in front of people that he knows.
"Then what she did--it damn near killed me--she reached in my coat pocket and took out my red hunting hat and put it on my head. "Don't you want it?" I said. You can wear it a while." pg 212
The significance is that Phoebe is saying that she loves him for who he is, and not somebody/something that he wants or pretends to be.
"i took off my coat and my tie and unbuttoned my shirt collar, and then I put on this hat that I'd bought in New York that morning It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks. I saw it in the window of this sports store when we got out of the subway, just after i noticed I'd lost all the goddam foils. It only cost me a buck. The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back-very corny, I'll admit, but i liked it that way. I looked good in it that way." pages 17-18
The significance of this quote is that Holden does admit that the hat he got is dumb, but it makes him different. The hat makes him stand out from everybody else.
"I couldn't find my goddam hunting hat anywhere. Finally I found it. It was under the bed. I put it on, and turned the old peak around to the back, the way i liked it, and then I went over and took a look at my stupid face in the mirror. You never saw such a gore in your life." pg. 45
"It is worth noting that the hat’s color, red, is the same as that of Allie’s and Phoebe’s hair. Perhaps Holden associates it with the innocence and purity he believes these characters represent and wears it as a way to connect to them."
Conclusion
The hat represents that he is unique and different in his own way,yet it's his way of showing his innocents of still being a child. This hat reminds him of something foolish and childish, so therefore, when he puts on the hat he feels the relationship of being a child and not having a care in the world.
"Sometimes i horse around and quite a lot, just to keep from getting board. What i did was, I Pulled the old peak of my hunting hat around to the front, them pulled it way down over my eyes. That way I couldn't see a goddam thing. Page 21
This shows that Holden is attached to his childhood, and he doesn't want to let it go. He still wishes that he were that child again so that he wouldn't have to worry about a thing in life and all of his problems would go away.
