This era was very important as the first games console was introduced in it.
The first games console was introduced in 1972. It was called the Magnavox Oddysey.
The Atari 2600 was the first console to sell well, selling over 30 million units. It was introduced in 1978.

The 1980s were important as it included the introduction of portable consoles.
The Nintendo Gameboy was the first handheld games console and remains the 2nd best selling of all time.
The 1990s were important as the PlayStation was introduced - marking a new era in gaming.
The PlayStation (1), introduced in 1995, revolutionized games consoles with things such as 3D graphics. It sold 100 million units.
The PlayStation 2 was introduced in 2000. It remains the best-selling console of all time as it sold 158 million consoles worldwide. It was also made until January 2013 - 13 years.
The 2000s were important as gaming changed dramatically, with the introduction of Xbox consoles, HD and DVD / Blu-ray.
The original Xbox was introduced in 2001, selling 24 million consoles worldwide. This marked the introduction of Microsoft for consoles.
The PlayStation Portable was introduced in 2004 and was famous for having console-quality games in your hands. It has sold 79 million units.
The Xbox 360 was introduced in 2005 to many hardware problems (like the red ring of death) but nevertheless was famous for its use of HD and tried to use HD DVD. It has sold 78 million units.
The PlayStation 3 was introduced in 2006 (2007 in the UK) and was famous for its integration of blu-ray disks. It has sold 80 million units.
The 2010s are important as they saw a revolution in all types of games consoles - some becoming even more than games consoles and some tablets playing games.
The PlayStation Vita, introduced in 2012 (2011 in Japan), is famous for its ability to play games like consoles do and also for it can play most PS4 games over Wi-Fi. It has sold 6 million consoles so far.
The Xbox One, yet to be introduced (coming 22nd November), is suspected to be a revolution as it also functions as a cable box. However, it is controversial over its policies which made the console connect to the internet every day to play games.
The PlayStation 4, yet to be introduced (coming 29th November), is coming with lots of support for indie games (games made by single people or small studios) and also no controversy like the Xbox One. (It is my personal choice, too).
The Nintendo Wii was introduced in 2006, famous for its new control method - the Wii Remote. 102 million Wiis have been sold worldwide and Nintendo recently terminated production.
There are other consoles but some aren't that important and therefore weren't included. I hope you enjoyed this presentation. Here is a video from YouTube (a short film about PlayStation History: (NOTE: This video contains footage of PEGI 18 games).
