Yr 7 Science - Dichotomous keys

This presentation can be used in a year 7 class after they have already had an introduction to keys and a dichotomous key to expand further on the characteristics of keys that make them either strong or weak.

Textbook Page 58 Let's talk about your pencil case dichotomous key! What makes a good key? What makes a poor key? Time to do handout 7!!! Please complete the following questions in your workbook:

Q 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 *The characteristics used need to be constant for each item/species.
eg. number of legs, body shape * Uses characteristics that can change for the item/species.
Eg. Colour, size What do you know about using keys?
textbook pg. 58 Dichotomous keys Try and use your key for the following items:
* Post it notes
* Protractor
* Sticky tape Were you able to identify all three items? Imagine how difficult it would be to design a key to identify all plants and animals! Please answer the following question in your workbook: What do you think makes a good key?
