A T P Adenosine Tri Phosphate The body's energy currency Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) provides energy for muscular contraction.
Key Concept:
The energy for muscular contractions is obtained from the catabolism (breaking down) of this ATP However, there's only enough of this 'energy currency' (ATP) stored to power 1-2 seconds of maximal activity! Most sports and activities last much longer than 2 seconds, so your body must replenish or RESYNTHESISE ATP on an ongoing basis... Understanding how this happens is the key to understanding energy systems! The Breakdown... In other words... ATP ADP + Pi + Energy Let's look at ATP more closely Estimates of daily energy requirements are between 100-180 moles of ATP (approx 50-75kg!) The total quantity of ATP in the average body is just 0.1 mole! (approx 50-100g!) It's easy to see that if ATP stores aren't constantly resynthesised during activity, muscular contraction couldn't continue. PHOSPHORYLATION is the biochemical process that replensishes ATP stores. Resynthesis In this situation it involves the addition of a phosphate group to ADP to form ATP. ADP +Pi + Energy ATP This energy is provided by the breakdown of several energy fuels (substrates) creatine phosphate glycogen (carbohydrates) fats protein Essentially, these fuels can provide the energy for resynthesis of ATP during P.A. for as long as sufficient stores of the fuels or substrates are available* The energy that enables resynthesis to occur is released via three distinct yet closely integrated metabolic pathways or systems Energy Systems Aerobic metabolism Anaerobic metabolism (also known as oxidative phosphorylation)
