EXPLORING COMPUTER HARDWARE By: Rubin Hazarika Vittore Zen IUSVE 2012-2013 So...What is computer hardware? Computer hardware refers to all the physical and tangible components of a computer system Motherboard Mouse USB ...Are just some examples Microphone These various hardware components can be installed inside a computer or connected from the outside. Computer hardware can be sorted into two major groups: The System's Unit and... The Peripherals The system's unit (also known as the tower) is the main part of a desktop computer. It houses the internal components of the computer that process data/information Lets have a look inside the system's unit... C.P.U. CD/DVD Drive AGP Slot Power Supply Motherboard ROM Chipset RAM Cooling Fan Heat Sync Hard Drive CMOS Battery SATA Cables PCI Slots Used to attach various hardware devices inside computers Powers the chip that holds some basic information (the date and time and system configuration settings) The "brain" of the computer. A microprocessor that processes basic instructions and complex functions Holds software the runs many peripheral devices An expansion slot specifically for graphics cards Used to connect hard drives (or storage devices) to a computer's -motherboard. Random Access Memory provides space for your computer to read and write data to be accessed by the CPU. A device that draws heat away from specific parts of the computer Provides electricity to power all components Brings cool air into the computer or draw hot air out of the computer to prevent overheating Houses the hard disk, where all your files and folders are physically located and data is stored. Disk drives that read and/or write data to a disk. The main circuit board of the computer that has several other devices/parts attached to it Look through all the different components at your own pace. Only a few a displayed. A peripheral is a device that inputs data or outputs information for the computer but is not part of the system's unit. They can be external (e.g. keyboard) or internal (e.g. modem) Here are a few examples... Congratulations, you've learned all about the two divisions of hardware! There are also five main functions of hardware Input Processing Output Storage Communication Involves putting data into the computer Input devices transfer data into the computer system Types of Input Data - Raw facts
Programs - Set of instructions
Commands - Key words
User Response - (e.g. 'yes', 'no', 'ok'...) The computer "speaks" binary The keyboard can input 256 characters The webcam feeds your picture directly into the computer Digitizers covert an image/drawing to a digital signal A trackball Multimedia Input The thinking and calculations that the computer does. Processing hardware stores and retrieves information.
Information is processed using the CPU.
The processed information is saved into the computer's RAM The Process of Processing This machine cycle is run repeatedly The CPU is the most commonly known processing device Graphics Cards... Network Card ...Are responsible for rendering an image onto the monitor/display screen Output describes anything that comes out of a computer It can be meaningful or gibberish, and it can appear in a variety of forms: binary, characters, etc... Output is basically data processed into information Types of Output Hard Copy Printed on permanent media Soft Copy Displayed on screen or by other non-permanent means RAM For more information check out these sites! Devices used to keep information for later use RAM is primary storage - It is volatile Thanks for Watching! It is the transmission and sharing of information over the Internet or other communication systems between two or more computers Multimedia is a combination of sound, graphics and text. It plays the most important role in a computer system - the brain The Processing System The 'Main Memory' stores all the current data and commands to be inputted/proccessed The CPU (Central Processing Unit) executes these commands through the machine cycle Can you figure out the type of output for each of these devices? External Hard Drive Watch this video for some great examples of storage devices In the processing process RAM is Main Memory Many of these 'devices' are auxiliary storage.

They are permanent and relatively safe.
