Transcript of THE INTERNET

Hello My Name Is....
A lot of people have become famous off the internet
Positive Impacts of the Internet
The internet can have several positive impacts on the world.
For Example:
Negative Impacts of the Internet
The internet can also have negative repercussions on people. For Example:
John Green's Take on the Internet
The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world.
The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The Internet got its start in the United States more than 50 years ago as a government weapon in the Cold War. For years, scientists and researchers used it to communicate and share data with one another. Today, we use the Internet for almost everything, and for many people it would be impossible to imagine life without it.

The communication director for the company that owns match.com, dictionary.com, and vimeo was fired after her tweet, "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!" was received negatively for obvious reasons.
Online Shopping
In a world where everything is just a click away, less people are buying things in physical stores every day.

How many hours a day do you spend on the internet?
"The internet has always been part of my life."
"Out of 24 hours I'd say roughly 18"
"I think it has made my life a lot easier, but I also think that it has taken a lot of interpersonal skills away from our youth."
"I believe the internet has had obviously both positive and negative effects. From a positive standpoint: greater access to information, greater communication is possible with people we haven't seen, for example skyping with relatives across the country who you only see periodically. However, I feel as if it's created a whole new almost psychological phenomenon of internet-related and social media related depression and other psychological conditions and a whole new wave...you know cyber-bullying and things of that sort."
"Does that count, like...instagram?"
"Probably about 10-12 hours a day."
"Probably like 3 and a half, 4"
Email and Skype have changed our world and revolutionized the way we communicate. It's as if borders, boundaries and time zones have gone away and we can just talk anyone whenever we want.
Social Networking sites have also changed communication. For example, Facebook can help you keep in touch with old friends. You can also use it to promote your business or events.
Speaking of...
There are many internet-based charities and foundations, such as the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA). The HPA have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for foundations for illiteracy, inequality, and human rights through online videos and auctions.

The film industry is suffering greatly due to people illegally uploading them to sites such as YouTube, Putlocker, Megavideo, etc. The Music industry is also struggling due to people downloading songs illegally, rather than buying them off of iTunes.
There are now frequent cases of falsified, mistaken, and stolen identities on social networking and dating websites. These problems can lead to anything as small as identity fraud to stalking, murder, and/or sexual assault.
War in Syria
The Civil War in Syria has dramatically played out over social media. Anyone that has a smartphone and connection to the internet have driven the world's outlook on the war through social media outlets such as YouTube and Twitter. Some videos have made it it difficult to tell the difference between the truth and propaganda, with all sides in the war using social media to promote their sides.
Obsessive Internet Use and Depression
Statistics have shown that people who spend a significant amount of time on the internet are more likely to show symptoms of depression.
Internet addicts are known to substitute real-life social interaction for online interaction, which is proven to have severe impact on mental health.
As of 2010, 1.2% of people, aged 16-51, were classified as internet addicts.
