Short History

I was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. My education was largely received through numerous experiments in sound and the furthering of his father’s work on Visible Speech for the deaf. I worked with Thomas Watson on the design and patent of the first practical telephone. In all, I held 18 patents in his name alone and 12 that he shared with collaborators. I died on August 2, 1922, in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.

During my youth, I experienced strong influences that had a profound affect on my later life. My hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland, was known as the "Athens of the North," for its rich culture of arts and science. My grandfather and father were experts on the mechanics of voice and elocution. My mother, who was nearly deaf, became an accomplished pianist and inspired him to undertake big challenges.

Why am I unique?
