Types of Hooks
- don't tell"

: use action or a "startling moment" to begin the hook
Example: "The timer is ticking down, I have seconds before it's over."

: use dialogue or talking such as a conversation or a character speaking
Example: "Run faster, Mary!" I screamed.

Open the story with a bold fact.
Example: "It takes about one million plays on Pandora for a songwriter to earn $90 off that song."

More Types of Hooks

use a quote from a famous person.
Example: "You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take." –Wayne Gretzky

Sound effects
: use sound words such as "Boom! Crash!" to begin the hook.

Example: "Bang! The pot fell to the floor."

"Paint a picture" with your words to help your reader
visualize what is going to happen in your story. Describe a person, place, or object
Example: "Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house."
