Points:3.0 Out of the Dust Genre Theme The genre of Out of the Dust is historical fiction. This book is historical fiction because Out of The Dust is about the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl was a hardship for everyone in the Southern Great Plains. It affected approximately five states. The protagonist of Out of the Dust is Billie Jo. Her mother died in a fire. Billie Jo is fourteen and she has to take care of her father and her baby brother. She used to play the piano but her hands were badly burned. Protagonist The antagonist of Out of the Dust is the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. The antagonist is the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression because money, food, and water were hard to come by. The wheat Billie Jo's father had planted never grew because there was no water and the seeds never stayed in the ground long enough to grow roots and grow. Antagonist The conflict is person versus nature because Billie Jo feels trapped in the dust. She hates the dust. The conflict is also external. The conflict is external because the dust is outside and everywhere. Conflict Setting Joyce City, Oklahoma is where Out of the Dust takes place. Joyce City is not a real city. Out of the Dust took place in 1934-1935. http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/depression/dustbowl.htm http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/depression/dustbowl.htm Sorrow and forgiveness is the theme of Out of the Dust.
