8 Qualities of a Community Hero
Definition: creative thinking; skill or cleverness that allows someone to solve problems, invent things, etc.

Ingenuity doesn't require a standout personality. Community heroes show ingenuity when they come up with creative ways to solve community problems. Ingenuity requires action.

Discussion: How did Will Kamkwamba show ingenuity?

Definition: a feeling of wanting to help someone who is sick, hungry, in trouble, etc.

Heroes save lives, even people they dislike. When we see someone that has compassion for people who are in trouble, this attracts us to the character. Community heroes care for all people and really listen to their problems. People who show compassion are the kind of people who you can come to when you have a problem.

Discussion: Who in your life shows compassion?
Definition: being happy/positive in all situations

It's really hard to be happy or positive when you are surrounded by lots of negativity. Community heroes show positivity by being that "light" during bad times. They try to find positive things to say in bad situations. They keep people thinking happy thoughts.

Discussion: Why is positivity needed for a community hero?
Definition: the quality of being honest and fair

A real hero believes in something and has principles. Community heroes look at problems and try to find fair ways to solve them. They don't lie. You can trust them!

Discussion: Why is it important to have integrity as a hero?
Definition: the quality of being true and constant in support of someone.

People who show loyalty have their friends' backs no matter what happens. Community heroes show loyalty to the people they serve. No matter what those people do, those heroes will fight for them, love them, and care for them.

Discussion: How did Will Kamkwamba's father show loyalty?
Definition: mental toughness and courage

All heroes have a goal or mission they're trying to achieve. Accomplishing this goal is never easy. It takes a lot of mental toughness and courage to achieve that goal. If you are showing grit, you are constantly going to work towards your goal - no matter what. Grit looks a lot like perseverance.

Discussion: Who is someone you know that shows grit?

Definition: knowing what is good and what is evil

This is something that separates the "hero" from the "villain." Heroes know what is right and what isn't, and will fight for what is right. Villains don't know the difference between right and wrong. If they do know the difference, they don't show it in their actions.

Discussion: How did someone we have studied show morality?
Talent or Skill
Definition: a special ability that allows someone to do something well; being good at something

I'm sure you've been in situations where lots of people try to solve a problem. Usually, the person who has skill or talent in fixing that problem is the person who comes up with the best solution. For example, you wouldn't call a plumber to fix your cable. Plumbers are SKILLED in fixing your pipes. Cable guys are SKILLED at fixing your cable or wifi.

Discussion: What is your talent or skill? How could you use that talent or skill to be a community hero?
Fascinating sidekick or posse
Hero needs a sidekick or a group of amazing friends. A fighter for truth and justice without any kind of backup or support is less memorable. i.e. The Justice League.
Being an underdog, or outgunned
You can't really root for a hero who doesn't, sometime in their life, face impossible odds, even if your hero has the coolest abilities in the universe.
Being an Underdog
Even if your hero is the strongest in the universe, you can't really root for a hero who doesn't face impossible odds or have some kind of challenge.
