Ray Kroc was a man who sold things to restaurant owners.
Kroc dreamed of putting McDonalds restaurants at busy intersections everywhere.
Kroc wanted to be a musician but became a traveling salesman instead.
Kroc was finally able to use the McDonalds brothers name, but he didn't have any money.
He borrowed money from a local businessman.
Everything about the restaurant was the same as the original.
More and More of the Same
As McDonalds grew so did other fast food places.
Between 1960 and 1973 McDonalds increased from 200 to almost 3,000 restaurants.
There were gasoline shortages in 1973 that scared fast food industries.
Fast food chains got so big that family owned restaurants began to go out of business.
The Pioneers
The hamburger was created in 1885 by Charlie Nagreen.
It was a meatball squished between two pieces of bread.
The hamburger was named after the German town of Hamburg.
Charlie sold hamburgers at the fair until 1951.
Seymour, Wisconsin was the original birthplace of the hamburger.

For a long time hamburgers didn't have a good reputation.
Hamburgers were considered "a food for the poor."
Murderers were using ground beef to kill people, there would be poison in them.
People voted about their favorite food, and hamburgers were one of the least.
Walt Anderson made a restaurant named White Castle which made hamburgers have a better reputation.
The population of Los Angeles grew between 1920 and 1940.
Kirby's Pig Stand was a restaurant where carhops would come to your car and bring you your food.
Richard and Mac McDonald opened their own drive-in restaurant but it didn't last very long.
In 1948 they fired all their carhops, closed their shop, and redid everything.
They made a new system, the speedee service system, where customers had to come in and the food was cooked in front of them.
They had young men working for them, and had cooks who could prepare the same thing over and over again.
Other restaurant owners were going to the McDonalds and opening ones like it.
Most restaurant owners weren't rich or famous, they were door-to-door salesmen, orphans, or high school dropouts.
Most of the fast food restaurant owners originally tried selling things or working places but ended up in the fast food business.
They would have to borrow money from banks or friends to get their business started.
Summary
A small idea that began in the 1880s wasn't very popular in the beginning, it started to branch out in around the early 1900s. The hamburger wasn't all that liked in the beginning but once people saw they weren't bad they started to eat them. After that people were building restaurants and selling hamburgers. It was a slow start but grew over time as the restaurants were placed around the world.
