Transcript of Transcendentalism

Transcendentalism is:
The belief in a higher kind of knowledge that can be achieved by human reason
A belief in a higher reality than that found in sense of experience Transcendentalism a spiritual essence or vital force in the universe in which all souls participate and that therefore transcends individual consciousness. Oversoul Relationship Optimism is the belief that goodness pervades reality. Optimism Belief in the primary importance of the
individual and in the virtues of
self-reliance and personal independence. Individualism Escaping the confines of society Nature In the movie Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Suess the people of Whoville believed nothing ever went wrong and when something did, many refused to believe it. One example of this is when in the middle of the day in Whoville it kept going from dark to light, dark to light outside and the Who's just kept going on because they knew of nothing bad. The Who's were "happy and save knowing only good news". The Mayor: "Well, what if Whoville's not safe?"
Councilman: "Nothing ever goes wrong in Whoville! Never has and never will! You bloodly boob!" There are five main characteristics of transcendental thought including: Oversoul, Relationship, Optimism, Individualism, and Nature In the lion king the song The Circle Of Life is an example of oversoul. This song is talking about how we are all connected. "It's the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding" By:Mary Blasi In the disney movie, Brave the main character, Merida, as a young girl saw wisps as she was running into the forest one day. Merida and her mother believed wisps were creatures that lead them to their fate. later in the movie the wisps lead Merida to her fate just as they believed. These wisps are an example of a spiritual creature having a relationship with people, or the characters in the movie. the spiritual relationship with people and the world Meridas Mother: "The will o the wisps will
lead you to your fate." The song We're the Sh*t by Cady Groves is a good example of individualism. In the song it talks about being yourself and nothing else. It talks about standing up for yourself and also not to stop being yourself because of what someone else thinks. These things are all characteristics of having individualistic thought. "So what if all we do don't make any sense
you're just so full of it at least we don't pretend.." In the song Paradise by Coldplay it talks about a little girl "expecting the world" and when she realized it wasn't all that she thought it would've been she "ran away in her sleep". This is an example of escaping the confines society because she used her dreams to picture something bigger. "When she was just a girl she expected the world, but it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep" "In the night the stormy night she'll
close her eyes, in the night the stormy
night away she'd fly And dreamed
of para- para- paradise"
