What stops people from whistle-blowing?
All childcare settings are required to have a policy for dealing with allegations against staff and whistle- blowing.

WHAT IS WHISTLE- BLOWING
When you witness 'bad practice' that may affect the care and welfare of children and young people and report this to your managers.
harming of a child or putting a a child at risk of harm
displaying behaviour involving or related to a child that may be seen as a criminal offence
behaving in a way that raises concern about the adults suitability to work with children
◾You should voice your concerns, suspicions or uneasiness as soon as you feel you can. The earlier a concern is expressed the easier and sooner it is possible for action to be taken.
◾Try to pinpoint what practice is concerning you and why.
◾Approach someone you trust and who you believe will respond.
◾Make sure you get a satisfactory response—don't let matters rest.
◾Put your concerns in writing.
◾Discuss your concerns with the manager.
◾Each individual has a responsibility for raising concerns about unacceptable practice or behaviour.
◾To prevent the problem worsening or widening.
◾To protect or reduce risks to others.
◾To prevent becoming implicated yourself.
◾Starting a chain of events which spirals.
◾Disrupting work .
◾Fear of getting it wrong.
◾Fear of repercussions or damaging careers.
◾Fear of not being believed.

◾A member of staff is not expected to prove the truth of an allegation, but you will need to demonstrate sufficient grounds for the concern.
◾The Manager of the childcare setting will undertake an investigation into your concerns and offer you support.
A person that 'whistle- blows is legally protected against being bullied, sacked or disciplined, if they have acted in good faith
If you have voiced your concerns to the appropriate person in your setting and you have not been taken seriously or/and no action has been taken then you must report the concerns to an external agency.

To identify the term whistle blowing and how this relates to bad practice
To explore the specific reasons for whistle blowing, giving examples
To evaluate 'bad practice' case studies identifying the procedure to take and the affects of whistle blowing to children and the whistle blower
Examine the Vanessa George case study and discuss the issues to validate the reasons and necessity for whistle blowing
