Transcript of 20% Time Introduction

How many points is this worth?
Will this be on the test?
Where is the
in learning?

Learning should be

Should be guided by our
authentic interests?

Should make us
better people?

Shouldn't make the
world a better place?
If you
don't think
learning is fun,
I'd argue you don't know much about either of those things.
Life is about challenging ourselves,

learning something cool,

challenging ourselves again.
and then...
To that end,
we're about to do
something that's
a little bit
Since 1948, the
company has encouraged employees
to spend 15% of their working time on their own projects.
One result?
Google famously gives engineers 20% of their time to work on projects not directly related to their main assignments.
One result?
So this is what we're going to do. We'll spend 20% of our class time over the next 18 weeks working on two self-directed projects.
Want to know a secret?
This project
Which is why I think
we should do it.
I'm going to complete a
project, too.
My project...
Do I have
your permission
The Rules:
• Project must be something new to you and

• Must involve creating something
• Must have a language arts connection

• If, at any moment, you feel lost, overwhelmed, or uninspired,

• You must be flexible/open to changes or adjustments

(just a few)
something you wouldn’t do in another class
(writing, public speaking, etc.)
you must set a meeting with me to discuss solutions
Yeah, okay...but how are we going to be graded?
Really! I mean,
the only thing that matters is points, right? Right?
Fine, I'll grade you...On this...
Grading the process, not the product.
(Failure is an option.)
60 Second Project Pitch (Elevator Pitch)
Checkpoint Meeting - Bi-Weekly
Weekly prep-work Exit Tickets
(Tell me what you worked on)
Final Speech Presentation (3-to-5 minutes)
Document/discuss the process.
"What did I do? What did I learn?"
John Green,
The Fault in Our Stars
about the test...
The test will measure whether you are an
informed, engaged, and productive citizen of the world
, and it will take place in schools, restaurants, hospitals, dorm rooms and in places of worship.

You will be tested on
first dates,

watching football,
and while
scrolling through your Twitter and Instagram feeds.
The test will judge your ability to think about things other than celebrity marriages, whether you’ll be easily persuaded by empty political rhetoric, and whether you’ll be able to
place your life and your community in a broader context.

test will last your entire life,
and it will be comprised of the millions of decisions that, when taken together, will
make your life yours.
And everything,
will be on it.
I know, right?
pay attention.
