Lesson 1:
This course helps students develop quality
writing skills by explaining and identifying the steps
involved in the writing process.
One type of writing is examined:
Introduce and
define the idea
of a Summary
Identify and list some
characteristics and qualities
of a good summary
Indicate the difference
between a good summary
and a bad one.
A summary is a short version
of a text that highlights the main idea.
Summary writing, done in your own words,
helps you remember what you understand
about the main points.
QUALITIES OF
A SUMMARY
A good summary should be comprehensive,
concise, coherent, and independent:
1. Comprehensive:
you should include all the main ideas of the text.
2. Concise and Coherent:
Your summary should be considerably shorter
than the source, but should make sense.
4. Independent:
use your own words to express your understanding
of what you have read.
The summary does NOT:
Provide general background
information.
Explain why you are doing
the research,
investigation or design
refer to later diagrams
or references.
Remember
What makes a good
summary?
Here is an example...
In this lesson you have learned, the definition of a summary, and the qualities of a good summary.
