Antigone- The hero. Antigone is considered the hero because she didn't care what Creon said and did everything to bury her brother who received wrongful punishment.
Ismene- the traitor. Ismene is seen as the traitor due to the fact she did not want to bury her brother Polyneices. Though Antigone did not care about the circumstances, she did.
Creon- The fall, due to the fact that he did not care about anything around him and only cared about himself. He was so focused on keeping his throne that he lost his niece along the way.
Haimon- loyal retained. He is the "loyal retained" because he remains loyal to his mother regardless of how at fault and stubborn she can be. And both ended up being punished.
Teiresias- mentor. He can be considered the mentor when the people around him are asking for his word and advice on things even if they don't end up going through with it listen. He is the one to tell Creon of his fault.
The boy- The Messenger. A solitary boy who bears the news of the deaths in the story. In the prologue, he casts a menacing shadow: as the Chorus notes, he remains apart from the others in his premonition of Harmon's death.
Internal: Antigone wants to honor Polyneices' body to fulfill the duty the gods demand on humans towards those that die.
External: In order to do the right thing, Antigone has to go against Creon's new law.
" But I from the shadows hear them: hear a city’s sympathy for this girl, because no women ever faced so unreasonable, so cruel a death, for such a generous cause" Antigone recognizes that her deed is coming from the generous nature in her
"My own brother and yours I will! If you will not, I will, I shall not prove disloyal"... This shows that Antigone is brave and is willing to die for doing the right thing.
Foils: The two siste. Antigone is braver, has more courage, and defends her family no matter what. This makes Ismene Antigone's foil.
Assonance: line (116 Parados )"For seven captains at seven gates, matched against seven.."
Monologue: (pg1074 line 9-47)
Creon is addressing the chorus by standing at the top step, he tells the people about how he is now the ruler of the throne and how the actions of Eteocles will be repayed with a proper burial and ceremony while Polynesis will receive nothing.
Tragic Hero- (pg 1071 Line 62 and 64-65)
"Since apparently the laws of the gods mean nothing to you" & "that must be your excuse i suppose but as for me, i will bury my brother I love."
Antigone being one out of two tragic heroes in the story, lets us know that she had to go through a tragic downfall. Which was her death.
Tragic Flaw- "Since apparently the laws of the gods mean nothing to you" This quotes is what Antigone's flaws consists of her loyalty to the gods and brother is "her tragic flaw" that in the end only brings her death.
Motivation: "since apparently the laws of the gods mean nothing to you". (pg. 1071 line 62). Antigone decides to disobey the laws that were made for the public in order to take in consideration the laws of the gods
Allusion: pg 1094 "How often i have heard the story of Niobe, Tantalus' wretched daughter, how the stone ...I feel the loneliness of her death in mine" Both Polynesis and Tantalus were wrongly punished. Antigone compares herself to Niobe because they are both living in sorrow.
Tone: (pg 1079 Ode 1) - "inexhaustible" "dim water" "sultry shoulder' "winter rain" The authors use of diction adds to the feeling of gloominess and darkness in the scene.
Verbal: In the initial dialogue between Antigone and Ismene, Antigone refers to "The worthy Creon" (in line 35). However earlier she stated her intentions to go against his decree, thus, she really does not believe he is a worthy king.
Situational: The main conflict of the story is that Creon believes that Antigone's brother is a traitor and declares that his body shall remain uncovered. Antigone feels that it is not right to her religious beliefs and is willing to die for burying her brother. The irony is that even though she tried to bury Polyneices, in end he is left to decay in the open, but Creon declares that Antigone should be buried alive for going against his decree.
Metaphor: " Long blade of the sun"
Personification: "Lips not frozen shut with fear"
Similie: "Rose up like a dragon behind me, shouting war"
Alliteration: "That bends the battle line and breaks it"
Foreshadowing: "When the laws are kept/when laws are broken"
