Transcript of Amoeba
The Amoeba reproduces asexually by bionary fission. Bionary fission is when the cell splits into two.
The Amoeba is a uni-cellular organisim that moves by protruding the cytoplasm in the cell. It is crawling-like movement.
Cell organization and movement
The category of the Amoeba is an animal-like protist because it gets energy by eating other organisms. This is known as being a heterotroph.
The amoeba moves by constantly changing its body shape.
The amoeba was first discovered in 1757 by August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof.
The amoeba captures its prey by enclosing the micro-organism with its body. It, then, engulfs the prey.
Amoeba can be found in both fresh and salt water. They can also be found in animals including people.
Amoeba does not have stomach. As such, the digestion of the food takes place in a number of vacuoles inside the cell. Certain vacuoles also perform the function of excretion by eliminating waste from the cell.
When the amoeba eats its prey, the prey remains alive inside the amoeba for some time.
The Amoeba mainly eats algae, bacteria and other protozones (tiny dead plant or animal matter). It gets its food by surrounding and enclosing its prey.
