Pre Ministry of Jesus By: Aileen
Betrothal- engagement of Joseph and Mary
God sent angel Gabriel to deliver a message to two couple. Zechariah and Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary. The angel deliver the message to Zechariah saying " don't worry Zechariah, you and your wife prayer is answered. your wife will bear a baby and you shall name him john. he will spread the news of the messiah coming and many people will follow him". Then angel Gabriel send the message to Mary directly from god, that say she will conceive a child from god , and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David".
Joseph who know about Mary's pregnancy try to break the engagement privately but then the angel come to him and say " don't be afraid Joseph son of David, to take Mary as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit". Matthew 1:18-24

interesting fact and possible misunderstanding
The fact is after the angel appeared to Joseph and tell him to take Mary as a wife he immediately marry her without thinking of what people will think about them. In any culture where a women and a man that rush with their married will create a scandal and people will think negatively to them. But the fact is the prophecy say that the messiah will be born from a virgin it makes Mary not sinful which is true because she didn't do sexual intercourse with Joseph.
historical context and question to consider
The meaning of betrothal Joseph and Mary in the jewish marriage is that they are married but not yet living together, They still live with their parents in a separate house. They will live together when they are ready enough, known as the "second marriage" and that happen when Joseph know Mary is pregnant and take her as his wife they start living together. Usually jewish women were typically betrothed around the age of 13 and Mary at time is quite young when she receive the message of god that she will be the mother of messiah.
Question to consider:
1. Why did Joseph chosen to be betrothed to Mary?
2. Are their marriage is all because Mary is conceiving the holy spirit?

Bible verse
New testament:
Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:26-35
Luke 1:32,33

Old testament:
Isaiah 7:14
Psalm 132:11 and Jeremiah 23:5,6;33:15,16

The bible verse is basically the prophecy of the messiah will be born from a virgin and will be descendent of David.
Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem
The angel give a message to Elizabeth that she will deliver a son in three month whom the bible known as John the baptist. Mary decided to visit her cousin and as soon as Mary arrive Elizabeth confirmed god revelation that she will give birth to messiah. Then Mary and Joseph have to travel to Bethlehem to register census order by the roman empire. When they arrive there is no place for Mary and Joseph to stay, so they spend the night in the place where animal were kept and give birth to Jesus that night. The angel deliver the message to the shepherd near the Bethlehem and say the savior, the messiah is born and they can find him in the manger in Bethlehem. The shepherds hurried into Bethlehem and found Jesus in the manger, just as the angel had told them. After they had seen Jesus, they spread the news, and everyone who heard was in awe. Luke 2:1-20
Historical context and question to consider
The idea of Jesus is born in 25 December
Question to consider: Is Jesus really born in 25 December?
All the history sources stated that the 25 December is the day that Jesus is born but nothing is stated in the bible that Jesus is born at that time. The bible says Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem to register roman census, but no such census taken in winter, when the condition is horrible, the road is blocked because of snow and the temperature is really cold.
So when is Jesus born?
The most possible answer is in fall season is the mot likely time based on the conception and the time when john the baptist is born, because the difference of time when john and Jesus is born is not that far.
Unusual point and interesting fact
1. Mary wanted to spend the night at an inn, but there were no "motel rooms" available because the inn was full.
FACT: There was no space (room) in the "upper room" of a private house because other family members had got there first, not a public inn, motel, hotel etc.

2. At this time, Scripture calls Jesus a “child,” not a “baby.” It is possible that little Jesus was walking and talking by then. Based on the calculations of King Herod and the magi (Matthew 2:16), Jesus could been two years old or under.

3. Were angels present at the birth? It seems logical to assume that FACT: they were, however, Scripture does not report it, and there is no evidence that angels were visible to Mary and Joseph at this time.
unusual point
King Herod
The fact that Jesus is conceive before the marriage give the idea that the holy family is less holy, But when he is born, He is born from a marriage couple means that Jesus was conceived and born after a legal marriage. This idea is the opposite of what the priest in the present time think that Jesus is born out of wedlock, like other children from an unmarried women today, and this is an "abnormal situation". Many people they claim that Mary as a in the same situation as a normal pregnant- unwed mother they said to be when she conceive Jesus.

After Jesus is born in Bethlehem during the time of king Herod, The magi from the east come and asked" where is the one who has been born king of jews", they saw the star from the east and they come to worship him. When king Herod heard about this news he is really disturbed and same as all Jerusalem. he called all the chief, priest and everyone and ask where the Christ was born, they say " in Bethlehem, and the prophet say that Jesus will be the shepherd of my people Israel. Then secretly king of Herod command the magi to go to Jerusalem and kill any children under 2 years old. but king Herod command the magi to deliver his message by worshiping the Christ. The angel have warned Joseph in a dream not to go back to Herod, They returned to their country by another route. Matthew 2:1-12
Circumcision on the 8th day
One of the life event of Jesus of Nazareth according to the gospel of Luke, This is following the tradition of Halakhah in jewish law where a baby boy should be circumcised on the 8th day after they are born and also in the same day where they are also given their name, same like Jesus which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Throughout Jewish history, circumcision has been an essential sign of the covenant between God and the Jewish people and one of the most widely practiced Jewish rituals.
This event of life is only mentioned in one of the four gospel which is the gospel of Luke. Abraham’s son of promise, Isaac, was circumcised on the eighth day as instructed by God. From that time circumcision became a most important rite in Israel and was carefully honored by the Jews in the days of Jesus.
Unlike in that era, people these day doesn't really care when should their son circumcised, they can do it in the 10 or 15 day after the child is born. But in the era where Jesus born it is really important to obey the rule to circumcised their son in the 8th day after they are born.

12 years old- teaching at the temple
When Mary and Joseph had done everything required by the law of the lord, they went back to Nazareth their hometown. Jesus grew up to be a strong man and the wisdom of god is with him. Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of passover, He was twelve at that time. after the feast Mary and Joseph returned home but Jesus is left behind in Jerusalem without them realizing it. they keep searching for him among their relatives and friends but they couldn't find him. Then they decided to go back to Jerusalem and when they go back they find Jesus is sitting in the temple among teachers, Listening to them and asking questions. Everyone who listen to them are amazed of his understanding and answers. When his parents saw him they are astonished by him. His mother said to him "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."
Then he answer " why are you searching for me?" he asked, " don't you know i had to be in my father house?" t
Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
(Luke 2:39-52)
