Alcohol is the drug of choice among youth. Many young people are experiencing the consequences of drinking too much, at too early an age. As a result, underage drinking is a leading public health problem Underage Drinking Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 18 die as a result of underage drinking, this includes about 1 900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1 600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings.
What is Underage Drinking? The Facts Effects on Teenagers New research on teens brain growth says that early heavy alcohol use may also have negative effects on the actual physical growth of brain structure.
Teens who drink alcohol are more likely than nondrinkers to smoke marijuana, use inhalants, or carry a weapon.
Teens who drink are more likely to be involved in dangerous sexual activities, like having sex with someone they don't know or not using protection.
