Transcript of Daily 5 & CAFE

Fostering Literacy and Independence The Daily 5 & CAFE "The Daily 5 is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence." SO..... What are the Daily 5? Where D5 provides the structure, CAFE provides a way to teach and assess reading strategies. Where does CAFE come in? Teachers assess students and choose a strategy to work on. What is the Daily 5? Where does Daily 5 Come From? Daily 5 was created by two sisters from Washington State, who were looking for a way to "work smarter, not harder". Gail Boushey and Joan Moser were exhausted from the energy they were spending cajoling, disciplining and directing students on a daily basis. They were questioning the value of busy work (worksheets) and the time it took to create and maintain centers. The Two Sisters conducted extensive research and developed a structure based on literacy learning and motivation research. "We spent too much time managing [students'] behavior, planning activities and putting out fires instead of teaching" p5. Daily 5 was created primarily to make sure students were engaged in meaningful literacy activities while teachers conferred with small groups and individual students. What does a typical D5 schedule look like? (See Your Handouts) CAFE Stands for... C F E Comprehension A Accuracy Fluency Expand Vocabulary Focus Lessons Students are grouped according to their needs. Groups are flexible and change frequently as students master the strategies. CAFE and D5 work together
