Transcript of If the World Hates You

Jesus' Purpose
“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.”
John 16:1
#1
Am I abiding in love?
"The degree to which a man loves and cares for his wife and children is directly correlated to how deeply he understands and grasps the reality of God’s love for him. For this kind of knowledge daily realizes the kindness of Christ our Bridegroom and the astounding love of God the Father."
Jason Berrus
#2
Living in God’s love
will mean
being hated by the world.
"If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you."
John 15:19
#3
Jesus offers rich encouragement for those living in His love.
1. Jesus stands in a long line of those who were hated for living in the Father's love.
If the World Hates You
“But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.”
John 16:4
“Am I living in the world in the way
that Jesus has directed me to live?”
"Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of My name, because they do not know Him who sent Me."
John 15:20-21
"If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own…."
John 15:19
"It is not the weaknesses and inconsistencies of Christians that the world hates, but their grace."
J.C. Ryle
"I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?"
John 5:41-44
“…why should people hate Jesus? What harm has He done? In the days of His flesh he robbed no banks, raped no one, murdered no one, slandered no one. He was known for His healing power, His words of truth, His unflagging integrity, and for the rich texture of His love. Why then should people hat Jesus, and His disciples after Him?”
D.A. Carson
"If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you."
John 15:18
2. Your being hated is because
you know the Father.
"But all these things they will do to you on account of My name, because they do not know Him who sent Me."
John 15:21
“…many believed in His name when they saw the signs that He was doing. But Jesus on His part did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for He himself knew what was in man."
John 2:23-25
3. Their hatred of you is part of His plan.
"But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: 'They hated me without a cause.'"
John 15:25
4. You’re not alone. He’s given you the Holy Spirit.
"But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning."
John 15:26-27
5. He’s told you opposition would take place.
Brace for it.
"I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. …I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you."
John 16:1-4
“…when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”
Acts 5:40-42
