Relationship Leadership is a relationship that is jointly produced by leaders and followers. Followership - willingness to cooperate in working towards the accomplishment of
the group mission, to demonstrate a high degree of teamwork and to build cohesion among the group (Boatman, S.A.; Gini, A. (1997). Without followers, there are plainly no leaders or leadership (Hollander, 1993: 29). Followers they play an active role in constructing the leadership relation
empowers & influence the leader's behavior
they determine the consequences of the leadership relationship
their characteristics could be moderators of the impact of the leader's behaviors.






What follower's characteristics do you think are influencing or have an impact on the leader's behaviors? THE CHARISMATIC LEADER-FOLLOWER RELATIONSHIP a person who acknowledges the focal leader as a continuing source of guidance and inspiration, regardless of whether there is any formal reporting relationship Charismatic relationship represents the strong links between followers' self-concepts and the leader, the collectivity (group, organization, movement) led by the leader, and the collective mission. In this case, followers - reactions:
identify with the leader, the group, and the collective mission and the vision articulated by the leader
transcend self-interests for the sake of the collective
engage in self-sacrifice in the interest of the mission
show emotional attachment to the leader
internalize the leader's values & goals
Characteristics of charismatic leaders:
self-confidence
need for influence
moral conviction
assertiveness Two types of charismatic relationships Personalized
Socialized Personalized Characteristics:
confused and disoriented followers (before)
provides a clearer sense of self and greater self-confidence
based on personal identification with the leader
Socialized Characteristics:
followers have a clear set of values & a clear sense of self
provides means for expressing important values
based on the leader's message Charismatic leadership requires that the leader display a strong sense of commitment to the mission, a high level of self confidence, and a willingness to take risks for the achievement of the collective mission.
Charismatic leadership process is the process through which the charismatic relationship is created and maintained. Formation of charismatic relationships Individuals are likely to be drawn to a leader who actively displays prototypical charismatic attributes, such as self-confidence or a high level of energy.
Followers may choose a leader based on the extent to which the leader is perceived to represent their values & identities.
What's your prototype of leader? Follower responses - are likely to be prone to blind faith in the leader
- unquestioning obedience to the leader
- likely to lead to dependency on the leader

Follower responses - responsive to the values & identities emphasized by the leader's vision/behaviors
- they are not susceptible to the leader's influence
- they are more discriminating in their responses to the leader and to exercise greater independent judgment & critical thinking Consequences of personalized charismatic leaders may feed the both the leader's desire for absolute power & delusions of omnipotence
may lead to the abandonment of ethical & other restraints on the use of power.
Consequences of socialized charismatic leaders follower's acceptance, support & approval of the leader are accompanied by their exercise of independent judgment & ethical standards
the leader will be empowered as long as he or she exercises restraints on the use of power Thank you!
Effective leadership processes occur when leaders and followers are able to develop mature leadership relationships (partnerships) and thus gain access to the many benefits these relationships bring.
