#### Transcript of application of statistic in education

Statistics
Statistic is a way to get information from data
Education policies planning
How does statistical knowledge actually helps in planning?

E.g.: “Teacher’s Perception towards the Teaching and Learning Science and Mathematics in English at Secondary School”
- Descriptive statistic analysis
- Frequency
- Percentage
- Inferential statistic
- Correlation
- Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 11.5
- Evaluate the effectiveness of classroom teachers.

- Compare the academic performances among classes, schools and states.

Example: PROM/SE
What degree of statistical literacy expected?
How to enable other to reach this level expected?
How to use statistics to improve the school system?

Thesis Writing in Tertiary Education
- Thesis is a research project that we have spent considerable time in
preparatory research (literature review), project design (formulation of a hypothesis), data collection (field and or laboratory), analysis (statistical examination of the data), and finally presentation and synthesis (examination of the statistical results in the context of your hypothesis and literature review).

- Each of these individual parts will consume considerable time and effort.

Reviewing
Education System
e.g. QS World University Rankings which list the best global universities by judging their teaching, research, employability and international outlook.

application of statistic in education
Data
Facts collected together for referencing or information
Information
Information comes from analysis of data.
eg: Mean height of the student in class, highest student in class, shortest student in class.
Statistics
Statistics is a tool for creating an understanding from a set of numbers.
Function of statistics
For example: A list of Height of students in class, blood sugar level of patients
Data is everywhere!!
Statistic is also applied in education for various purposes:
- Educational planning
- Reviewing education system
- Thesis writing in Tertiary Education
-Identify society's needs in education
Introduction of new policies, such as abolishment of PMR, EteMS etc.EteMSSeveral studies conducted:

“Should English for Teaching Mathematics and Science (ETeMS) in Malaysia Be Abolished?”

“Teacher’s Perception towards the Teaching and Learning Science and Mathematics in English at Secondary School”

“Student’s Perception on Teaching and Learning Mathematics in English”
Involves calculation of Z-scores & cumulative probability score etc.

e.g. UKM -- ranked 259th in QS World University Rankings 2014/2015.
Application of statistic enables us to review our score, compare with other universities and upgrade to achieve higher score.

How?

PLANNING
Demografic
Statistics
Total population by sex and age
- For the purpose of regional planning
- For the relevant administrative districts.
- A distinction between urban and rural area because of the differences in educational needs.
Population projections
- Projection concerning future changes in the population structure is important for education planning.
- Projections to integrate process of economic and social planning.
- Provide different regions of the country, particularly with a breakdown into urban and rural areas such as figures are needed for various purposes of local planning.
Nativity, mortality and migration

- To help to make a rough estimation of live births and the crude birth and death rates for sufficiently long periods of years past.
- To review significant regional differences in the rate of population growth.
- For external / internal migration with an appropriate age distribution, particularly the population movement from rural to urban areas.
Cross national products, indices of economic growth
- The less developed areas will often be difficult to find any adequate data in this connection.

- The economic resources of a country are naturally of a decisive important in education planning.
Total public expenditure by authority and purpose.

- Information should be provided about the total expenditure by all kinds of public authorities in the country, central or federal government.

Economic and Financial Statistics
Engage students in relevant data analysis activities.
Consider the use of interactive dynamic software.

Question
Suggestions
-Statistical analysis is the core of a thesis.

-Statistics is used to analyse data by comparing variables
the outcome of analysis indicates the validity of the hypothesis and reliability of the data.

-Theories or new knowledge are formed through statistical analysis

Identify Society's Needs in Education
- Statistics are often used by NGOs to ask for reconsideration of education planning of the government

- Statistics on job opportunities and occupations demands in society is used to identify the number of intake of each courses in Malaysia.

Eg: Lack of Doctors in hospital- Increase university that offers medicine degree.
Excessive doctors in future- reduce intakes in medicine degree

Conclusion
Statistic is definately widely used in education field.
-From preschool education to doctorate studies.
- From Student population to the ministry of education
WHY?
It is very helpful tool for self reviewing of the government, the school, the teachers and the students.
It is also important for the government for policies setting, convincing the public of the new policies.

It is also important for the government for policies setting, convincing the public of the new policies.

eg. Implementation of PT3, Implementation of english teaching modul.

Without Statistics, Education will be in a mess. No conclusion could be made. No academic findings can be identified. No good policy planning can be done.
