IMPRESIÓN 3D DE COMPOSITES
Transcript of IMPRESIÓN 3D DE COMPOSITES
Origin of the idea
Project feasibility analysis
Before starting with the origin...
What is 3D printing technology?
It is a technology based on create objects by depositing layers of material.
- Non-limited designs
- Costs reductions
- Opening our doors to new markets
Origin of the idea
Carbon fiber composite manufacturing:
What do we get by introducing this technology in our company?
High complex designs
Which are the most interesting materials?
Which method is most suitable to use?
Extruder head capable of use them both.
Continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic
Why continuous carbon fiber?
MÉTODOS DE IMPRESIÓN
Many thermoplastic resins have an increased impact resistance to comparable thermoset composites. In some instances, the difference is as high as 10 times the impact resistance.
Proyect feasibility analysis
3D printing is a mature and well developed technology
Extrusion of the materials
Temperature control and positioning of tool.
Development of the machine
Aluminiums, coppers, bronzes.
Other mechanic and electrical commercial components.
Machining of components.
Installation of electrical and mechanical components.
Calibration of machinery.
Current status of this sector
There are lots and lots of companies using this technology at this moment.
b. Filament Winding: continuous reinforcements
either previously impregnated with a matrix material are placed over a rotating form or mandrel.
There are employees with a wide knowledge in composites.
This is an innovative project with great competitive advantages over the current products in the market.
The market sees a growing demand in the composite materials sector.
There are already existing companies in the aeronautical sector that benefit from this technology rather than other materials.
a. Spinning the resin into fibers that then are commingled with the reinforcing fibers.
When the length of the fiber is such that any further increase in length does not further increase strength of the composite, the composite is considered to be continuous fiber reinforced.(generalmente L>15Lc)
That means, better mechanical properties in the resultant material.
Requiring people with knowledge of the technology.
The company proceeds from a conventional fabrication tradition.
It is a technology that is still under investigation and maturing state.
There are no other similar competitors at the moment.
There is a necessary change in the composite materials manufacturing.
Mtorres owns an innovative philosophy .
Economic capacity to deal with a project of this nature.
3D printing technology can be exported to many other market segments.
Employees' health problems
EXTRUDER HEAD DESIGN
Highest mechaninal and chemical properties, even at a high temperatures.
Processing temperatures range when working with peek 382-399 ºC
PROBLEM: impregnation with thermoplastic resins is much more difficult than with thermosetting resins.
However, carbon fiber and PEEK mixure has excellents properties in the final composite material:
More economical than peek
Easier to work with
Lower final properties, sometimes not suitable for aeronautics.
The other major advantage of thermoplastic composites is the ability reform.
This allows thermoplastic composites to be reformed and reshaped.
PROBLEM: the minimun proportion needed of thermoplastic is difficult to calculate.
It is based on the "Filament Winding" process
Perforated membrane which allows fiber impregnation without loosing its path till the nozzle.
But, how many of them has a similar product?
Nowadays, competitors are almost nil, but it is well known that some brands are developing their investigation following this same line.
Then, who could be a potential client?
In fact, many sectors use carbon fiber composites in some parts of the designs from the sports sector til electronics, they all could want this machine.
Materiale, supliers, production costs, etc.
Most of materials are commercial components and, in most of cases, their costs are relatively low or affordable for the company.
Apar from that...
This project introduce huge costs reductions from time and material savings.
Environment and health
Some advantages of this nature are:
It is safer to work with
Less chemical pollution due to chemical consumables
Less pollution due to support materials
Could be recycled
Thermoplastics have some disadvantages, as wear.
This is a cleaner and safer technology.
Critical fiber length
E = (23-29) GPa
Thank you for your attention.
Similar products are coming from other companies.
