with neutrons and unknowingly achieves the world's first nuclear fission. 1938
Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman successfully split uranium into two seperate, lighter elements. The fission of uranium creates energy and additional neutrons, the basis of the atomic bomb 1940
Leo Szilard and Enrico Fermi receive a grant from the United States government to develop an atomic pile at Columbia University in New York. 1942
