attended Indianna State University became a writer for the Chicago Tribune in 1991
earned an M.F.A. from Warren Wilson College 2005 served as the distinguished writer in residence at the University of Hawaii 2006 visiting writer at De Paul University Works 1994 published We Came All The Way from Cuba So You Could Dress Like That? collection of short stories set in chicago which portray refugees of all types
--Cuban boat people, junkies, gays (some dying of AIDS, some not) 1996 published Memory Mambo The novel explores the importance of memory and what it means to be a Cuban in the late 20th century. Worked for the past 10 years as a reporter
for the chicago Tribune RUINS published in 2009 tells the story of UsNavy
(pronounced "uss-na-vee") who lives with his
wife and daughter ib a small apartment UsNavy remains faithful to the ideals of the revolution
even though many of his friends have abandoned those beliefs.
UsNavy seems to always follow the rules, he refuses to buy anything off the black market.
He gives his t.v. to the young autistic boy. Neda is his fourteen year old daughter
seems typical. lost her birth certificate and identification lidia is his wife she was recently laid off from her job The story is set in 1994, which for Cubans is known as The Special Period the Special Period occured after the fall of the Soviet Union. Cuba experienced a severe economic depression that lasted for much of the 1990s The country lost 80% of its' exports and imports there were widespread food shortages and many people went hungry the oil shortages led to the breakdown in transportation and agriculture 30,000 people fled Cuba in 1994 UsNavy's most prized possesion is a beautiful tiffany floor lamp
Anyone wanting to leave Cuba was allowed
