Art Criticism
What do you see in your first reaction?

Make a judgement of the artwork (strengths and weaknesses with reasons)
In groups of two, students will have a print out of of La Grande Jatte. Together, as the teacher asks them questions from Feldman's model of art criticism, they will describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate the artwork. They will write down their evaluations as a written component of this assignment (along with discussion).

Pointillism: Cotton Swab Style

Materials:
cotton swabs (q-tips)
acrylic paints
water in spray bottles (to keep paint wet)
bristol board (14in x 17in)
pencil (for sketching)

Use a picture, after choosing from various magazines, to paint your own artwork using cotton-swabs and pointillist techniques.

Did you know that when you watch television, the pictures are made up of tiny dots of color?
This is how magazines, newspapers, and comic books are printed, too.
Pointillism
Tiny dots of pure color placed next to each other. When see from afar, the eye automatically blends the colors together to make another.
Georges Seurat: Hebegan painting La Grande Jatte in 1884. It took him two years to complete this enormous work of art (10 feet wide). Known for initiating Neo-Impressionism.
Before class, the teacher will collect many magazines with large pictures for the students to choose from (preferably nature or up close faces). The teacher may already have many large posters of artworks the students could choose from as well.
Students will choose a photo to reference and begin sketching on the bristol board (I chose this so when students use the cotton swabs the paper isn't flimsy).
Students need to be thinking about colors when choosing their photo.
After sketching, the students will have a palette of pure colors to dab onto the bristol board (painted next to each other, no mixing!)
A lesson on the color wheel may be needed or reviewed.

This painting does not have enough effort. This would be okay for elementary school.
This has more depth. You can tell the student took time to get every detailed color in the butterfly and background.
