Transcript of plastics
Plastic is made of a semi synthetic material . 90% of all plastic has petroleum in it, and each year we produce about 550,000,000,000 pounds of plastics . So we are using up the fossil fuels.
In 1839 Charles Goodyear discovered a way to treat rubber and and make it resistant to water ,chemical reactions and electricity .
the first true plastic
In 1907 Leo Hendric Baekeland invented the first true plastic . It was made from a synthetic material which means it is not found in nature.
the problem of plastics
Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose and burning it gives off lots of nasty chemicals too so that isn't a good option. It's piling up in seas and oceans with no good way to get rid of it.
It is piling up in the sea and animals are getting caught in it like this seal ,and some animals mistake it for food . One case of this is that sea turtles mistake plastic bags drifting through the water for jellyfish .
plastic on land
As well as creating pollution in water it also creates problems on land .
Plastic is based off a molecule that is not found in nature. Because of this it takes hundreds of years to decay. Plastic is made of a semi synthetic material .
recycling plastics is good ,but it gives off some nasty chemicals
how can we help?
#1. We can help by not buying plastic bottles at the store. Bring your own water bottles that can be reusable. They can pollute lakes and hurt animals.
#2. When you're shopping don't get plastic bags bring your own fabric bags. you dont want this to happen do you?
this isn't hard , is it!
#3. Reuse. If you buy plastic products to use them mutiple times.
#4. Reduce. If you can avoid plastic products.
#5. Recycle. Don't throw away plastic items. Recycle them.
