It will either ask you to write to persuade or to argue.
Today you will practise using last year's question We will begin with... Varied & sophisticated sentence structures LO: To be able to vary sentences for effect. 1. Discuss on your tables:
What is a Minor, Simple, Compound and Complex sentence?
2. Write an example of each in your book. Starter: Sentences Simple: The cat sat on the mat Compound The cat sat on the mat and it ate its crummy dinner. Complex: Ready to eat its crummy dinner, the cat sat on the mat. Practice Think back to the Olympics and think of an Olympian you saw winning gold.

Your task is to describe, in a paragraph or two, the moment this person won gold using a variety of all four sentence types.
You will have a go and then I will show you mine. He's taken the lead. Sweat pours, blood pumps and a heaving congregation worships with a roar. Snapping his neck to the left, he clocks the might of East Africa behind him. Their eyes are fixed and their mouths are clamped with steely determination. He has one lap to go. Setting isn't included in stories for its own sake. Sometimes the best way of letting your audience know how a character is feeling is to describe him/her moving through a setting. Choose a setting. Make a character walk through the setting. Describe how they move and describe the setting using sophisticated vocab. Do not tell me directly how the character is feeling. Let the reader work that out. I jerked upright, the drifting aimless thoughts pushed away and replaced with a consuming anger at what had happened. I screamed at the wind. Swearing and yelling blind.

Words wasted into the snow and wind, shouted to no one in particular in a shaking fury of bitterness and grievance. Idiot words, as meaningless as the hissing empty wind around me. Pick all the words or phrases that are effective and explain why in as much detail as you can i.e.
“fallen”- verb “fallen” has connotations with death which is what could happen.
“dying”- emotive adjective reminds us of the seriousness of the situation
“and Simon with me” – the last clause reminds us of Simon and the pain he is going through. “I had fallen, and I was dying, and Simon with me.” Final Task Draft an opening to your piece, using effective vocabulary to describe character and setting. Use a poem as the basis for a short story. 6. ‘Life is too easy for young people today. They lack challenges and don’t have to fight for anything.’
Write an article for a magazine of your choice which persuades your readers that this statement is either right or wrong.
