A form of natural disaster when the water level in lakes, rivers or the sea covers land that is usually dry After inundation, they are beneficial to our ecosystems for soil fertility, and also help to recharge underground stores of water Occurs anywhere in the water cycle When the discharge is so great, the channel can no longer contain all the water, causing the river to overflow it's banks Amount and type of rain (commonly heavy rainfall)
Temperature
Previous weather conditions
Rock type (permeable and impermeable rocks)
Relief
Snow melt Building on floodplains
Deforestation
Global Warming
Population increase
Poor water management Physical/Natural Causes Human Causes What caused the Bangladesh Flood Physical Causes Human Causes Consists of huge flood plain
70% total area is less than 1 meter above sea level
Heavy monsoon rains, especially over highlands
Tropical storms bring heavy rains and coastal flooding
Main cause was above average and long period of heavy rain which caused all 2 rivers to have their peak flow at the same time (Ganges and Brahmaputra river) Deforestation in Nepal and the Himalayas
Global warming, increasing snow melt and rainfall
Urbanization of the flood plain
Increase of Bangladesh population(150 million people) Floods in LEDC The quality of the buildings isn't as good as MEDC so it can't withstand flood
Lack of money
Lack of sanitation
The hospital facilities isn't as good as MEDC hospitals Solutions Dam (Kaptai dam in Bangladesh)
Levees
Embankments
Houses built on stilts Environmental Economical Social Destroyed agricultural sector Many farm animals such as goats, cows,
chickens died due to the flood About 1000 people died Many people died because of the diseased water and terrible or no living conditions It effected the export industries
as it decrease 20% in production Bridges and roads were destroyed
so the government need to fix both of it The flood cost Bangladesh
round US$ 1 billion 25 million people
became homeless Effects of the Bangladesh flood Aftermath of the Flood Kaptai Dam Levees Embankments House on stilts Disease
Famine
Financial loses
Homeless Who helped Bangladesh and
What did Bangladesh get? UK gave about 70 000 tons of
wheat and steel, and gave 21 million pounds
Canada with 12 500 tons of wheat
and medicine
Egypt gave money and medicine
USA sent two planes which contained food, medicine, blankets and tents
WHO (World Health Organization) collected money to give to Bangladesh Conclusion In conclusion that is not the only flood that have hit Bangladesh but that is the most deadly and it left a lot of damage. We can't predict if there will be another flood like that happening again in Bangladesh and we can't stop it from happening either. Even so, there are ways we could prevent it from happening so often by stopping deforestation, building on floodplains, and also giving awareness to the locals to be more careful in what they do.
