Father was wrestler, died when young
Excelled in academics
Attended Hiram College and later enrolled at Williams College

Early Childhood
On November 11, 1858 I married Lucretia Rudolph
Had five children
started to study law
elected Ohio State Senator in 1859, serving until 1861
Led a brigade at Middle Creek, Kentucky, against Confederate troops
27 Years Later
Ohioans elected me to Congress
President Lincoln persuaded me to resign my commission
I repeatedly won re-election for 18 years
I soon became the leading Republican for the House

Strengthened Federal authority over the New York Customs House
On July 2, 1881, in a Washington railroad station, a attorney shot me
Wounded I lay in the White House for weeks
On September 19, 1881 I died of infection and internal hemorrhage
