One of the nation's 1.8 million women veterans was the only one to earn Congressional Metal Of Honor, for her service during the Civil War.
Walker was finally appointed assistant surgeon in the army of Cumberland and she made a uniform for herself in response to the demands of traveling with soldiers working in field offices

Congress tried to take away her medal, she refused and wore it until the day of her death in 1919

When war broke out, she came to Washington and tried to join the union army; though denied as a medial officer she volunteered anyway serving as an acting assistant surgeon.
