By 1400 Florence was one of the
richest
cities in Europe.
One of the richest families was named Medici
Lorenzo Medici
Most famous family member.
Came to power in

He was a patron (supporter) of the arts.
Scholars and artists flocked to Florence, where "Lorenzo the Magnificent" supported their work.
Renaissance Writers and Painters
During 1300s, humanists began to search Italy for artifacts from
Greece
and
Rome
. They found:

coins
statues
People were able to study these artifacts.
A New Kind of Writer
During the 1200s writers began to write in their own language for local readers.
One famous man was Petrarch

In late 1400s the Renaissance was spreading to northern Europe
