WRITTEN BY SUSAN COOPER
THE KING OF SHADOWS IS A FANTASTIC NOVEL
RECOMENED FOR AGES 10-14 YEARS
I GIVE THIS NOVEL A 7/10. Review of the Novel THE KING OF SHADOWS STARTS OF BEING SET
IN LONDON, ENGLAND IN 1999, BUT HAS THE STORY
MOVES ON IT IS SET IN LONDON ENGLAND 1599 setting MY FAVOURITE SECTION IS CHAPTER FIVE.
CHAPTER FIVE: SET IN 1999,'THE BOY NAT LIES SHIVERING IN BED CURLED UP, CLASPING HIS HOTWATER BOTTLE, GROWING GRADUALLY WARM.'
'MRS FISHER COMES BACK TO CHECK HIM. FLUSHED AND DAMP-SKIN, HE IS BARLY RECOGNISABLE.
'SHE HAS NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. HIS SKIN IS ON FIRE, HIS HAIR WET WITH PERPIRATION; THERE ARE RED SWOLLEN AREAS ON HIS NECK. SHE CALLS HER HUSBAND, AND IN SUDDEN FEAR THEY TELEPHONE THEIR DOCTOR. THE DOCTOR IS NOT AT HOME. THEY CALL FOR AN AMBULANCE.'
'IN THE EMERGENCY WARD, NURSES RECEIVE THE BOY IN PUZZLED ALARM; THEY START SPONGING DOWN THE FEVERED BODY, THEY PEER AT THE SINISTER DARK SWELLINGS IN HIS NECK, HIS ARMPITS, HIS GROIN.'
'THE DOCTOR ON DUTY COMES, FROWNS, ORDERS AN INTRAVENOUS LINE, BLOOD TESTS, ANTIBIOTICS. SURPRISING THE NURSES, HE ORDERS THE BOY TO BE MOVED TO TO AN ISOLATION WARD.'
'HE CALLS, EVEN THAT THIS HOUR OF 3AM, A COLLEAGUE WHO IS A SPECIALIST IN TROPICAL MEDICINE. HE SAYS,' YOU AREN'T GOING TO BELIEVE THIS, BUT I THINK WE HAVE A CASE OF BUBONIC PLAGUE.'

I LIKE THIS PART BECAUSE IT IS EXCITING IT ADDS TO THE MYSTERY OF THE STORY, HOW CAN HE BE BACK IN 1599 AN ACTOR AT THE GLOBE THEATER AND BE IN 1999 IN THE HOSPITAIL WITH THE BUBONIC PLAGUE? HOW CAN HE HAVE THE BUBONIC PLAUGE IN 1999? TRAGEDY-THROUGHOUT THE NOVEL NAT IS HAUNTED BY THE TRAGIC DEATH OF HIS PARENTS.
HISTORY-THE WHOLE STORY HAS GOT SOMETHING TO DO WITH HISTORY E.G. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, QUEEN ELIZABETH...
LOSS- NAT HAS LOST HIS PARENTS AND WHEN WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE COMES ALONG THE HOLE IN HIS HEART IS FILLED ONLY TO HAVE IT TAKEN AWAY AGAIN
