Constructing Thesis Statements through Pre-writing Continued
One pre-writing method I use is a cluster map, here is an example: on white board
Body paragraphs should include three separate main points . Each of these points should begin with a topic sentence. A topic sentence guides the body paragraph just as a thesis guides the entire essay
This paragraph should wrap things up and bring your paper to a nice close
It is a good idea here to repeat your thesis statement in a different way to remind readers of your central idea
Our hip-hop sample --What is wrong with it?
Before we talk about references, there are some points to remember
When choosing a thesis, remember that you do not want a thesis that is too broad ("Disease shaped human history") or too narrow ("I failed my biology course") You want a thesis that is just right!!
Remember to use transitions within your paragraphs.......
Impact on pop culture 3rd
Salt and Peppa
Sugar Hill Gang
Impact on Women

Introduction: Start your paper in a creative way, tell a story, use a quote or statistic, but most importantly include a thesis statement at the end of your introductory paragraph
Sometimes called 1-3-1 Essay
Possible Thesis Statement from our Cluster Map:

Ways to Create a Thesis: Through Pre-Writing
- Making a List
-Preparing a scratch outline
What is a thesis statement???
The evolution of MTV, the Rodney King incident and the Watts Riots have all had a historical impact on hip-hop music.
Throughout history, hip hop has produced artists that were taken away too young. The deaths of Whitney Houston, Tupac Shakur and Marvin Gaye could have all been prevented.
Hip-hop has impacted the way young people dress, talk, and behave in society.

Tips for Creating Effective Thesis Statements
Avoid being vague- what is the point you want to prove about your topic? A better working thesis would require more thinking and research. -Remember a thesis can be re-worked-Sometimes it helps to write your thesis after you have started writing!-Avoid announcing your thesis "Today I am going to talk about....," "The subject of this paper will be...."-Avoid having more than one idea
How could we revise our hip-hop statement? It would be possible to do a paper just on the history of hip-hop, its artists, or its impact on society
