Teaching to learn, learning to teach

Challenges and opportunities for professional leadership

@TeachingCouncil
There’s something rather wonderful about having

your eyes opened to new and effective teaching

methods sixteen years into your career as a

teacher. There’s also something rather worrying

about this, however....

.... wondering just what exactly I’ve been doing all

these years!
...exciting and terrifying...!
If we want to grow in our practice, we have two

primary places to go: to the inner ground from

which good teaching comes and to the

community of fellow teachers from whom we

can learn more about ourselves and our craft.
How do you feel?
“.. for all are connected with emotion and place and without sequence”. Yeats
…schools are emotional theatres par excellence....

The role of the teacher is grounded in emotion, shaped by emotion and acted out in an emotional context.
“No life is a waste. The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone.”
"We operate within a culture where we like to

think of ourselves as kind to others whilst

maintaining stoicism in the face of our own

difficulties. Broadly speaking, our sense of

dignity outweighs our comfort in revealing

vulnerability. " Ferguson
