REALITY TV: WHAT IS IT?
OxfordDictionaries.com:

television programmes in which real people are continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative.
Dictionary.Reference.com:
television programmes focusing on members of the public living in conditions created especially by the programme makers (a genre of television programming in which “real life” people are followed in a situation, game, etc.).
Macmillandictionary.com:
television programmes that do not use professional actors but show real events and situations involving ordinary people.

REAL VS. SCRIPTED
GENERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
Millennials (born after early/mid-1980’s) are considered the “technology generation.” Meanwhile, the Post Millennials (Post Gen, Gen Z, iGen, Gen Wii) is even more accustomed to reality and social based media.

TOO MANY BORING & OUTDATED COUNSELING VIDEOS!
AWARENESS, KNOWLEDGE, & SKILLS
Regardless of perceptions, we are experiencing glimpses of human behavior by watching reality TV. By choosing to view and reflect on the lives of individuals, we have a responsibility to remember that we are dealing with people. Students should be cautious, reflective, empathetic, and culturally sensitive.

Weekly case conceptualization, treatment planning, and staffing of client with classmates

Case conceptualization should also address diagnostic criteria, interventions, goals (short & long term), cultural background, strengths, and possible challenges in working with this client

Cultural considerations are to include domains of gender, ethnicity, age, sexuality, SES, and/or religion (spirituality) etc.

Love it or Hate it? Hate(d) it! Initially did not see the value in reality television

Observation and interactive class discussion fostered a better understanding of client’s cultural background and symptomology in organic manner (realistic)

Staffings allowed for input from classmates (& instructor) and facilitated learning for challenging cases (from different theoretical conceptualizations)

Each student had different "client" so the group supervision and staffing allowed individuals to see multiple perspectives for a diverse group of clients
