Transcript of Copy of Copy of Tongues Workshop

One important gift is the gift of speaking in tongues. This gift is important for our personal edification, for building up our community in CFC-FFL, and for opening us up for greater empowerment
for our mission.
God wants to
give you the gift
of tongues.
Desire it as well
and accept His gift.
Tongues connects

Tongues Workshop
The Gift of Tongues
Part of the Spirit’s work is to have that desire to experience God more and more everyday.
One powerful experience is speaking in tongues.
of our Lord
The Feast of Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday.

It is also the "birthday" of
the Church.
Now God encourages us to speak in tongues because He says so in
1 Cor 14:5

"I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified."
What is the Gift of Tongues?
Speaking in tongues is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit where one speaks an unintelligible utterance or a language which he does not know, and which he does not understand.
Acts 2:4
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 10:45-46
The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

Tongues could
even be
a language.

Speaking in tongues is speaking to God.
1 Cor 14:2
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
Why is Tongues important?
It is a gift of the Spirit.
1 Cor 12:4,10.
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
Tongues is important as a gift of prayer.
It is one of the most basic components of a Christian life and with tongues, we experience God in a powerful way.
It is important because it helps build up the body of Christ.
It is an important ministry in the Church, a ministry designated by God Himself.
1 Cor 12:28
And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.
What is the value of tongues for us personally?
Gives us a new dimension in prayer.
Gives transforming effect on one's spiritual life.
Some Pastoral Notes
Tongues is important, but we need to see it in its proper place.
The baptism in the Holy Spirit,
with its manifestation of tongues,
is not needed for salvation.

Salvation comes through the
cross of Christ.
Pastoral Notes
Many Christians experience the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives without experiencing the gift of tongues.
Consider the
Apostles before
Tongues is important, but it should not be overemphasized.
Pastoral Notes
It is only one aspect of our life of faith. It is not the focal point of our faith.
1 Cor 13:1.
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
How do we receive the gift of tongues?
First, we should desire it.
Since we desired it,
we should then
ask for it in faith.
Mt 7:7 11
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Then we yield to and cooperate with God's Spirit. How do we do that?
We open our mouth and speak out.
Obstacles to receiving the gift of tongues
Trust in God.
Faith. Accept that any gift from God is good and desirable.
Gift is not based on one's worth or on good works. It is a free gift of God for every Christian who desires and asks for it.
Humble yourself.
God does not force us. We need to cooperate. Open your mouth and speak out.
In our life of faith, there are things we have to believe in even before we can understand.
God loves us so much that He wants to pour upon us His bountiful grace and gifts.
May God be praised!
In Conclusion
"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
