Scientific Process
What is Science?
Science is a body of knowledge based on the study of the natural world
As a discipline, Science is largely defined by its primary method
Observation
Questions
Hypothesis
Experimentation
Conclusion
Hypothesis-Driven
Observational-Driven
Observation means perceiving objects or phenomenon using one or more of the five senses
The first step in understanding something is to focus on a single question or small set of questions
Scientists rarely answer big, general questions all at once
A hypothesis is a testable statement that can be shown to be true or false by experimentation
NOT A GUESS
cats use the dark side of the force
Dogs bark at cats because
This sets a limit on science;
Science cannot speak directly to such issues as morality or religion
An experiment is a planned procedure designed to test a hypothesis
A good experiment makes sure that we are examining the contribution of a specific variable, "experimental variable", to the observation
To ensure the results are meaningful, an experiment contains both a experimental group and a control group
Experimental Vs. Control
Receives some
kind of treatment
Receives no
treatment
Independent Vs. Dependent
The factor that is changed
What happens
as a result
the site of cats elevates their midi-chlorian hormones
Scientists analyze the data obtained from an experiment in order to reach a conclusion as to whether the hypothesis is supported or not
Theory
A theory is an explanation for natural events that is based on a LARGE number of observation
evolution
gravitation

gene
Data
Should be presented in a neat fashion, usually tables and graphs
