What is Red Biotechnology? Red Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make useful products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems and living organisms, to make or modify products or processes for specific use". How did it start? In 1986 came the first advance in the medical field and in biotechnology. The first significant laboratory production of factor VIII, which is a blood clotting protein that is not produced, or has greatly reduced activity in people with hemophilia. This experiment was very significant because this procedure, the human gene that codes for the blood-clotting protein is transferred to hamster cells grown in tissue culture which produces factor VIII for hemophiliacs. How is it used? Its is used for medical purposes as well, such as; finding genetic cures by going through genomic manipulations and creating organisms to produce antibiotics.

One such use of Red Biotechnology is the use of recombinant DNA protein insulin needed for type 2 diabetes.

In the late 20th and early 21st century, biotechnology has expanded to include new and diverse sciences such as genomics recombinant gene technologies, applied immunology, and development of pharmaceutical therapies and diagnostic tests What careers are involved? Red biotechnology is also used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system) as also in the field of cancer research. To treat Parkinson’s disease, the technology helps to discover the mutations as well as the amplifications of the gene that causes the disease. In the field of cancer research, the technology makes it possible to detect whether the anti- cancer drugs are effective for a particular patient as the efficacy of these drugs depend on the gene disposition of the patient to whom the drug is administered.
