Treatment and Prevention

Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Dizziness or fainting

Signs and Symptoms

Rhythm: grossly irregular
Rate: Atrial rate 400 b/min or more
Ventricular rate varies and is less than atrial rate
P-waves: f-waves along baseline
PR interval: immeasurable
QRS complex: Normal < .10 sec.

Identifying ECG Features

Coronary artery disease
Coronary heart failure
Men more likely than women

Risk Factors

Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation
Begin suddenly and stop on their own 24 hrs to a week
Persistent Atrial Fibrillation
More than a week
Can stop on its own or with treatment
Permanent Atrial Fibrillation
Normal rhythm never restored
Paroxysmal and persistent AFib may lead to permanent

Types of AFib

AFib or AF
Heart arrhythmia
Rapid and disorganized electrical impulses
Arises from an ectopic atrial pacemaker
Quivering atria
Rate > 400 b/min
