Do you know the strongest and largest living lizard today? Well it's the Komodo dragon. The Komodo dragon is a huge lizard that can grow over 10 feet long and weigh over 300 pounds. These Komodo dragons have a muscular tail, rounded snout, and a flat scaly head. It is a vertebrate because it has a backbone. They are extraordinary creatures!
Komodo dragons mate between May and August. Females usually lay 30 eggs all in September. Female Komodo dragons are ready to mate when they're 4 or 5 years old. Males are ready when they're 7 years old. It takes 8-9 months to hatch eggs. Young Komodo dragons are small and defenseless. They only weigh 3.5 ounces and are only 16 inches long. Komodos live about 30 years in the wild.
The Komodo dragon is a carnivore. Babies eat little lizards, insects, eggs, and birds. Adults eat wild pigs, deer, young water buffalo, and on one island long tailed macaque monkeys. Sometimes they eat people, but this is rare. They also eat their own kind.
Komodo dragons live in the Tropical Rainforest biome. They live on islands around Indonesia and on Indonesia. Some animals the Komodo lives with are wild pigs, deer, water buffalo , goats, and on a certain island, the long tailed macaque monkey.
