The rewards for success in elite sport are increasing every year and officials are under
greater pressure than ever from players, supporters and the media.

Discuss the suggestion that the increased use of technology to help officials make the
correct decision has improved the sporting event.

Mark Scheme
Advantages
Ensure correct decisions are made/fair competition/less controversy/players more confident in decisions
Helps officials communicate with each other
Less pressure on official to make the final judgement/less post-match criticism
Timing/measurement accurate
Creates excitement in crowd waiting for decision/allow players to officially challenge decisions
Disadvantages
Officials using technology can still be wrong/technology can be used for everything/officials are an integral part of the sporting contest/over reliance on technology/lose respect of official’s decision being final
Specific technology used must be accurate/high level of reliability
Changes the nature of the sport
Cost limits use of technology at events/not consistent for all players or spectators
Breaks in play can be disruptive for spectators if too long

Technology
Technology is undoubtedly the
major influence
whether it is in
equipment and facilities
or
sports science
which helps coaching and training methods. An athletes performance is now measured in
minute detail,
such as timing in the 100m and technology such as Hawk's Eye can help decisions.
Advantages:
Cameras have assisted make tough decisions - e.g. photo finish in 1932 Olympics
Referees and umpires feel strong about the video camera as it gives them confidence in decision making
Helps officials communicate with each other
Less pressure on official to make the final judgement/less post-match criticism
Disadvantages:
Some believe technology takes away the theater of the game as it should be played and officiated by humans
Officials using technology can still be wrong/technology can be used for everything/officials are an integral part of the sporting contest/over reliance on technology/lose respect of official’s decision being final
Advantages:
Waiting for a decision may create excitement in the crowd
Adds to the spectator experience
Improved technology means people can now stay at home at watch games, therefore saving money
Disadvantages:
Some sports receive more funding than others creating an unfair advantage to the use of technology each sport has
Some people feel technology takes away the nature of sport
Disadvantages:
Waiting for official decisions may cause disruption in the crowd
Games being shown on TV means crowds are likely to be smaller at games leading to less money being spent within clubs
Advantages:
Players are more confident in decision making
Likely to create fair play during games
Can be used after games for sport analysis to help the performer improve - this can boost motivation
Prosthetic devices have also been constructed for those athletes with a specific disability
Wheelchair devices used in sporting activities have also become more sophisticated, for example, with sharply slanted back wheels in tennis to allow the player to move swiftly across the court from side to side
Advantages:
Can use technology to learn about the opposition and how they play, tactics can then be developed to help win the game
Can be used in training for sport analysis, this can allow the coach to focus on specific aspects of training that need improving
Disadvantages:
Some analysis methods are expensive which may mean some clubs can afford them and some can't - leading to some clubs having better methods and so are at an advantage
Disadvantages:
Not all players agree with technology - lose their right to appeal
If the decisions are not made instantly, the game may be disrupted
Goal Line Technology is used to assist the referee, likely to mean decisions are more accurate and this may not always favor the players
Advantages:
Also helped in terms of injuries, improved technology means injuries can be treated quicker and easier
Athletic health can be maintained and observed, through the production of modern sporting technologies such as heart rate monitors, pedometers and body-fat monitors
Participant safety at all times has also been made possible through the development of certain sporting equipment, such as helmets and body protection which are used in boxing and ice hockey to help prevent injuries
