Standing in the hall of fame

Lyric 1 states that a person could be the ‘greatest’ and the ‘best’. Despite this being extremely encouraging, there’s a slim chance that this will come to be.
Lyric 2 implies that one can beat ‘the world’ and ‘the war’. It also states that one can talk to God and bang on His door. This is largely unrealistic and is a clear exaggeration. However, it still has a motivational effect.
The reoccurring hyperboles in the song make us metaphorically question the limitations that we put on ourselves. Though the hyperboles are farfetched, they manage to leave an encouraging and inspirational effect.
Lyric 1 illustrates allusion as the songwriter is referring to the gorilla named King Kong from the movie ‘King Kong’.
Lyric 2 uses the term ‘the hall of fame’ as a conceptual allusion. The lyric states that when someone dedicates themselves, they will achieve something so prestigious that they’ll be placed in the hall of fame where they will be admired.
I believe that this song was made much more visual by the use of these allusions. By making familiar comparisons, the listener is enticed.

In the chorus, the word ‘fame’ is rhymed with the words ‘name’ and ‘flame’. The use of these similar sounding words creates an appealing effect and makes the song catchier.

Situational Irony
“You can walk straight through hell with a smile”
This lyric showcases situational irony as one would not expect to smile or be positive when dealing with hell (metaphor for hardships). Yet it shows us how not even hell can faze someone with a positive and determined attitude. The lyric adds a bit of paradoxical humor to the song’s inspirational message.
This lyric uses parallelism by using the word ‘be’ accompanied by nouns that display ambition, such as ‘champions’ and ‘preachers’.
The repetitive use of identically structured sentences adds to the song’s catchiness. Moreover, it ensures a consistent tone and makes the message more straightforward.

"You can be the King Kong banging on your chest."
The main theme of ‘Hall of Fame’ by The Script ft Will.I.Am. is knowing that you are every bit capable of achieving greatness. This song is one of my favourites as it is pleasant to listen to and gives off happy, positive vibes. I also enjoy the skillful use of literary devices throughout the song. Moreover, this song has both encouraged and empowered me. It has managed to steady me every time I stumbled. It has managed to erase my self-doubt, replacing it with determination. It has made me question my limits and has made me understand that I do not necessarily need to have any. I have chosen this song because no matter how many times I listen to it, the message remains timeless. Every time I am filled with the exact same fortitude. I admire this song as it has unknowingly mentored me and countless others. To me this is not just a song- it’s an anthem.
