Transcript of Soul Surfer

Author: Bethany Hamilton Soul Surfer This book is about a thirteen year old girl that survived a shark attack when she looses her arm and relives her story to others. The story takes place in the beach town of Kauai, Hawaii. The twenty two year old victim is very well known around the world today for her incident although she was a young teenager when she was attacked.
The main character, Bethany has to learn to deal with having one arm. She puts her faith in God and even helps other people around the world with their difficulties. She shows people that they should never give up and keep doing the things they love no matter what happens. Bethany still surfs today with one arm. One connection that I had with this book was that I have two older brothers and I'm the youngest as well as I'm the only girl just like Bethany. I can connect when she says "two brothers" to anyone that asks her why she is so competitive. Facts From the Book

Soul Surfer in "surfspeak" means a surfer who merely surfs for the love of the sport.

Three weeks before the attack, Bethany and her best friend Alana were surfing at the same location where Bethany was attacked.

Bethany's three favorite things about living in Hawaii is that its never cold even at Christmas time, there is always something to do, and the bananas and papayas that grow all over the island.

The shark was caught and hung by Ralph Young and Billy Hamilton. One of my favorite quotes:

"I had a shiny, light blue Rip Curl watch on my left hand that I was dangling in the water. I sometimes wonder if the reflection of that watch in the clear water is what attracted the shark. That's when I was suddenly aware of a large gray object closing in on my left side." (70). This is a quote from Bethany Hamilton when she was thinking back to the attack. The other connection that I had is Bethany lives in Hawaii and if I had any place in the world to go it would be Hawaii. I really would like to go there because it seems so much different than the United States but it is still part of the U.S. I think that is really unique. It also seems very different from the rest of the world. Bethany seems to love it there and this book allowed me to connect with how much I think I would love it. I've tried to explain why I feel the way I do and it's impossible. Only surfers get it: the rush, the addiction, the way it stirs your heart, plays with your head, and tortures your body. Yet you keep coming back for more..."(119). This quote is Bethany Hamilton explaining why she surfs. My second favorite quote:
