On Being Male
Shane Koyczan: The Bullied and the Beautiful
What is it to be male?
How are men and women traditionally represented in literature?
How are female voices silenced or overshadowed, particularly in comparison to male voices?
What do these representations and implications say about how gender roles function, both in the past and presently?
It uses a scale from 0, meaning exclusively heterosexual, to 6, meaning exclusively homosexual.
Pressures to Live Up to Expectations
the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
it does not state that one sex is superior or inferior to another
argues that men's liberation is a necessary part of feminism as they are harmed by sexism and gender roles
Second Wave (1960s- 1980s)
:the movement's undercurrent began post-WWII
:harshly criticized for being a white woman's movement that catered to the middle-class
:focused on de facto cultural impacts (sexuality, body image, etc)
:Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystic and the writings of Gloria Steinem pushed for gender reform much to the dismay of conservatives
First Wave (1848-1920)
:focused on de jure rules; whereby, suffrage and civil rights were key characteristics that defined this movement
:ended with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 granting women the right to vote
:other aims included property rights for women and protection against abusive husbands
Three Different Waves
with their own subcategories
(1965) Supreme Court overturned a Connecticut law prohibiting the use of contraceptives on the grounds that it violated the "right to marital privacy"
Equality for all means no special privileges for any
Women's bodies as weapons
Women being seen as soldiers not women
Women being biologically different from men
Simone de Beauvoir,1940s, women are perceived as "second sex" or "other" in the patriarchal society; enforced by gender norms and expectations
Leads to Betty Friedan's The Second Sex, which criticizes mainstream images of women
The Cult of Domesticity
3rd Wave Feminism
:in reaction to the homogeneity of 2nd Wave Feminism, it was more culturally aware and less economically strident
:allowed women to embrace "artificial" femininity; there is no singular concept of a "feminist"
3rd wavers strongly chastised 2nd wave feminism for it's sometimes aggressive, singular stances
Is this fair? Why?

Radical feminism views patriarchy as dividing rights, privileges and power primarily by gender, and as a result oppressing women and privileging men;
