Japanese Pop Music

WHAT IS THAT!?
J POP is used to describe popular music in Japan with western influence. J Pop includes rock, dance, hip hop, and soul music!
Early Pioneers
J POP vs. KPOP
J Pop today, primarily consist of girl groups and boy bands. Each staying true to an individual style and sound. The only competition to the JPOP stars are those of KPOP! For example:
Way Back When
J POP can be traced back to the year of 1952 also known as " The Year of the Jazz Boom". After WWII was over, western soldiers that occupied Japan introduced country music and rock-n-roll.

1960's
During this period the music industry in Japan was restructured and concerts and tours resurfaced. Many of the artist during this experience gained notoriety by performing for U.S. soldiers.
Eleki Boom
The Eleki Boom is another name for the Electric Guitar. This instrument became very popular in the 60's, but only after a visit from The Beatles in 1962. This instrument is currently key to the sound of JPOP music.
1970s-1980s
During the 1970s, the music shifted in Japan from the simplicity of folk music and rock and roll to a more complex musical sound which featured the topic of love and romance. This was called New Music. In contrast to New Music, City Pop, which is music with big city and high life theme became popular during the 80's.
1990's
During this period "JPOP" was coined and referred to all japanese popular music. one agency in particular was responsible for the JPOP boom during this period, and that was The Being Company! Many of their artist became the biggest selling artist in japanese history, including the group WANDS which is said to be the group responsible for the boom.
