In Spanish there are four ways to say the word "the"
el- the los- the
la- the las- the
Which form of the word "the" you use depends on the noun that follows.
if the noun ends in

in Spanish all nouns have gender....
Nouns in Spanish are all masculine or feminine. It has nothing to do with our concept of what is a "guy" thing or a "girl" thing. ( the word for dress is masculine, the word for a tie is feminine)
What determines if a noun is feminine or masculine *in most cases* is the letter the noun ends with.
perro
mesa
silla
cuaderno
pluma
libro
masculine nouns
feminine nouns
Just like in English, plural nouns end in "S"
if a noun ends in a vowel just add an "S"
if the noun ends in a consonant add and "ES"

plural noun
feminine

some nouns don't end in an "o" or "a" ... then you just have to memorize
so it looks like ...
