History of
Katherine Lee Bates
An Important Point
In the song “America the Beautiful”, by Katherine Lee Bates, she describes how the pilgrims worked hard to create our country. In the second stanza, Katherine shows how hard the pilgrims worked to be free and to develop our country. First they came and explored the land knowing they wanted it to be their home. Then they worked hard to fight for freedom from Britain, which cost them a lot of work and stress. They became free because of their commitment and putting their foot down on American land and making it theirs.
What the Poem Means
Key Words
and Phrases
Freedom- the quality or state of being free, this song was made around the time America got its freedom

Brotherhood- friendship or alliance, America had to become friends with other countries so that they could trade with them.

Pilgrim- one who journeys in foreign lands, the pilgrims first came to America (on the mayflower) but now we honor them with Thanksgiving and other holidays.

Description
Born in Falmouth in 1859, Katharine spent the first 12 years of her life in Falmouth before moving with her family to Wellesley Hills. She graduated from Wellesley College and went on to become head of its English Literature Department. Katharine’s legacy to us is her ability to find inspiration in the world around us, her belief in the best of people and her courage to take risks in the fight against the injustices of the world. She was a woman of her times and for all times.

O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed
His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,

Whose stern impassion'd stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country loved,

And mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness,

And ev'ry gain divine!
O Beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam,

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

America's skies are beautiful

We produce food east and west

Mountains are part of America

Open sky above our people and produce

God blesses all the people in America with freedom

Be kind and respect everyone

To all America
America is beautiful for patriotic goals

That will last for a long time

America's cities stay strong

Not affected by human strife

Let God give and show grace to America

And give good people friendships

To all America
Pilgrims made America beautiful

The stress coming from an unjust government

Gives hope to those who have none

Wilderness everywhere

God help us to find our weak spots

Watch our every action

Laws protect our freedom

America is beautiful because soldiers and citizens stayed strong through hard times

Who loved their country more than themselves

And compassion more than life

Let God improve America

Until success comes from being moral

All progress comes from God
